Important Information

The tax compliance checks are relevant for all self-employed individuals engaged to perform work for the University which consists of personal services (as opposed to supply of goods), but not issued with a contract of employment. This applies both to individuals engaged directly, or via intermediaries (for example, Limited Companies registered with Companies House).

The check consists of a two-step process by completing two separate forms:- Step 1. HMRC Status Indicator and Step 2. Online Data Capture. The forms can be completed by the engager or the individual being engaged.

In order to obtain a tax reference number from the Tax team, please follow the process outlined below:

Step 1. Begin completing the HMRC Status Indicator and save the result to PDF. You can do this by selecting 'Get a copy of this result' once all questions have been answered. Next, it will ask if you want to add any optional details to the document relating to the engagement, then click 'Continue'. At this stage you will see your result and completed form on your screen. Underneath the wording 'Keep a copy of your determination' you should select 'Save as a PDF'. You should now be able to choose a location on your computer to save the PDF file.

Step 2. Scroll down and fill in the Online Data Capture and save the responses to PDF. Once complete, you have 15 minutes to view and save your responses. In order to do this, you should select 'My responses'. At this stage you will see your completed form on your screen. Besides the completion date (towards the top of the form), you will notice it states 'Download as PDF', you should select this. Right click the document and select 'Save as'. You should now be able to choose a location on your computer to save the PDF file.
